PLAY-OFF hunting Sheffield FC edged out Lincoln United at Ashby Avenue on Saturday as they secured all three points in the UniBond League Division One (South).

In the Whites' last home game of the season, the world's oldest football club, Sheffield, scored the only goal of the game Steven Woolley in the 20th minute, to which Lincoln couldn't find a reply, writes Tom O'Brien.

"We started well," said Whites boss John Wilkinson. "However, in the second half the game became a battle and both sides cancelled each other out.

"We were unlucky not to take the lead. We've hit the post and created three or four good chances.

"They've got the break, and in the second half, we've not managed to repeat the ability to break them down that we've shown in the first half.

"We had to stay with them. They're a big side and a lot of sides like that would have come and rolled us over.

"In that respect I'm happy we stayed in the contest, but it's a shame we were not able to find that little bit extra to get something out of the game."

United began well as Sean Cann's effort rebounded off the post and Matt O'Halloran's well struck half-volley flew just over the bar.

But Lincoln fell behind when Woolley curled home his effort from the edge of the area to put the visitors in front.

Sheffield had a second disallowed when would-be scorer Gavin Smith was adjudged to have pushed O'Halloran in the area.

In a game where clear cut chances were hard to come by, United could not find a way past another former White, Leigh Walker, in the Sheffield goal when presented with openings.

"It was just as important to me today to see some of the younger lads like Chris Funnell and Liam Bull, as it was to win the game today," added Wilkinson.

"We've tried to stretch the pitch in the second half and George Zuerner, who I thought had a great game, tired and I had no replacement for him.

"They pulled Kallum Smith too deep and at the end of the day it wasn't to be.

"We want to go to Market Drayton next week and finish on a high.

"We won't have as many young players as they've earned the right to play in the reserve cup final, but whoever goes we'll be looking to win."

WHITES: Ziccardi, Fleming, Porter, McDaid, Wilkins, Bull, Zuerner, O'Halloran, Funnell (Garrick 66), Cann, Smith (Troughton 76). Subs not used: Coyde, Melton, Wright.
