A NEW lottery-funded gym was officially opened to the public by former athlete and World's Strongest Man Geoff Capes in Billingborough at the weekend.

The Billingborough Community Gym has been organised by volunteers from the local area and it was granted £10,000 from the National Lottery to set it up in the village hall.

Mr Capes, who grew up in Holbeach said: "When I first started out there weren't gyms about and although this is just small it's a start and if people take advantage of it then we could have young athletes of the future starting out here."

The idea for the gym came about when local residents requested to store their unused fitness equipment in the village hall which had been used for storage for about the last 20 years.

Caroline Jackson, a self-employed personal trainer and one of the volunteers who helped set up the gym said: "Previously the nearest gym for people living here was miles away and we wanted to make fitness accessible for everyone.

"The prices are very reasonable and we hope that lots of people will want to come and use it."

The hall which has been fully refurbished now contains cardio machines, weights and has a changing room.

Debbie Chessum, a health trainer and another of the volunteers said she had always been involved in the village hall and had been trying to come up with ideas to get money into the hall for some time.

She said: "A lot of people in the village were asking me how they could get fit and so a year ago we applied for the lottery grant and were delighted when we got the confirmation in June last year giving us the go-ahead."

“Geoff Capes is a superb sporting figure, i have more respect for a human being that can demonstrate huge feats of strength than i have for someone who can ride a pushbike a little faster than anyone else or someone who can fall of a high board into a swimming pool without making much of a splash !”
