Youngsters help to run their own youth club in Woodhall Spa
YOUNG people are helping to successfully run their own youth club which had been threatened with closure.
The community of Woodhall Spa came together last year to help secure a future for the youth club in the village.
Last year, Lincolnshire County Council stopped running several youth facilities in the county passing them onto to communities to run themselves.
Since then, the club in Woodhall Spa has risen from the ashes with just four members last February to some 75 young people now and for 2013, they want to see it developed even further.
The children have a say in the activities they take part in and even decided on the name – Young Union @ the hub.
The club, which meets on Mondays at Coronation Hall, has a stalwart of adult volunteers to help run it but club always needs more people to help.
Treasurer Richard Sanderson told the Target: "The club is an example of a wonderful success. The young people are very much involved with running it, not only did they decide on the name, they came up with a logo and there are young people serving on the management committee.
"We've been lucky with the volunteers who are very committed to help run the club which sees young people turning up every week. If we can get even more it will help the club to grow and may even give us the option of opening on a second night.
"We would like more volunteers to help us from people who can share a skill and lead an activity or young leaders who could do voluntary work for their Duke of Edinburgh scheme or students who are training to be teachers, or anyone who can help in any way."
The club is for school years five to 13 and is inclusive of all the schools in the Coningsby and Horncastle areas which has seen children mix together.
Some of the activities which the young people have done include First Aid training and cake decorating.
The children are going to start a photography course soon which will see their work featuring in the Woodhall Spa Photo Club exhibition in March.
The club has been supported by a grant from Lincolnshire County Council and donations from Woodhall Spa Print and Copy and Woodhall Spa Country Show.
