Top award for Lincoln filling station at 2013 Forecourt Trader of the Year Awards
A service station has been given a prestigious award after being open for just two years.
SPAR, at the Birchwood Avenue and Skellingthorpe Road junction in Lincoln, clinched the Best Site with a License to Sell Alcohol title at the 2013 Forecourt Trader of the Year Awards.
It was also shortlisted for the Forecourt Trader of the Year award in the Midlands category. The business, run by Phil Hickson and his family, was opened in summer 2011.
Mr Hickson, who also runs a SPAR store in Newark Road, North Hykeham, said: “We’re over the moon to do what we’ve done. We’ve only had it two years – to be nominated is excellent, so to win is fantastic.

“There were quite a few fuel retailers in the category that have been around for 30 to 40 years, so to win takes a bit of doing.
“I think it shows that with a forecourt you need to have a convenience store too, and the days of just having a filling station are numbered.”
As part of the judging process, the shop was visited twice by assessors in secret.
Mr Hickson said: “They were just looking at the general offering – being clean, being bright and finding out what people wanted at the right time.”
The awards took place at the London Hilton hotel in Park Lane, on Thursday, September 19.
The Italian Job themed awards evening was hosted by impressionist and comedian Jon Culshaw.
Guests enjoyed an evening of networking and entertainment including a disco, casino and Scalextric.
The event was attended by almost 700 people from the petrol retailing industry.
