Black magic for banger final
The "Black Magic" bangers are the brainchild of Uncle Henry's Farm Shop butchery manager Louise Boughton, who has combined pork and herbs with an altogether more unusual ingredient – chilli chocolate.
And she hopes the strange concoction will not only wow judges Paul Daniels and Debbie McGee, but go on to join previous contest entries among the shop's regular range.
The sausages will be cooked by an expert from the British Sausage Appreciation Society in Nottingham on Wednesday next week.
"We like experimenting," said Ms Boughton. "And we're always trying new recipes – so it's nice to find one that works.
"We enter this competition every year.
"In the past we've done a cheese and pineapple flavour – when it was a party theme – which is one of those that sounds revolting, but became very popular during the summer.
"And last year we did the Red Arrow, which didn't get through the regionals – maybe because it had too much chilli – but now it's one of our best sellers.
"The chocolate we're using is actually from Special Edition Chocolate at Market Rasen."
But with six days still to go, only their creator – and judges on a preliminary tasting panel – have tried the meaty treats.
Yet Rosanna Benn, owner of Special Edition Chocolates, is not worried, saying she can't wait to try the fiery sausages when they go on sale next Friday.
"I've not tasted them as they are top secret until the competition, but I'm a big fan of Uncle Henry's and everything they turn out is first class," she said.
