Then, your question on the next story about the council's highways budget would be "why does it cost so much to repair the roads?". Or worse, 'why are they making so many people at the council redundant?'”

“I've just recieved a very interesting letter from LCC. "REFURBISHMENT OF CROSSING FACILITIES" "COMMENCEMENT DATE 24 OCTOBER 2011" SCHEME - MONKS ROAD (ABBEY STREET) REPLACEMENT. APRROXIMATE DURATION OF WORKS - 1 WEEK.

The best bit?

"The work is to refurbish the existing pedestrian crossing and will be completed whilst the road closure for Lindum Hill is in force for other local works. Monks Road will be Closed westbound from Bagolme Road to Lindum Hill.

So as I see it the majority of the southbound traffic diverted from Lindum Hill will head for Monks Road. Then when they reach Bagholme Road they will again be diverted down Bagholme Road and right onto Croft Street/Rumbold Street. I can't see these roads coping!”

It seems to me they are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

BTW if Tritton Road was closed at 9pm as you suggest, four hours work would be lost so the road will have to be closed for a third day and the cost would increase accordingly.”

“@phuzz - sticking two finger up at the motorist! You have to be joking. The motorist is the only constituent that LCC gives a toss about. Adult and Children's Services slashed; highways budget maintained. Subsidies to buses slashed; money found for bypass et etc”

“Hurculese, I know the very hole that you are talking about. I've got so used to driving around it that when (if) it is fixed its going to take time to get used to not driving around it.

As for doing the work at night, its been done in residential areas before and as has been said, this is the major route through the city and whether or not it is half term the city will be at a standstill.

Finally, some people won't be able to avoid the area. I live at the city end of Monks Road and obviously Monks Road will be the main diversion route. I personally am able to not use the car at many times but when I do have to use it I can see myself sitting in queues of traffic for ages when almost home. Other people will have to use their cars for work etc so will be stuck most days.”
