It's official – Lincolnshire people will be miserable as sin for today.

Appropriately labelled Blue Monday – to tie in with the general mood of the nation – today has been scientifically proven to be the most depressing of the year.

And the combination of rotten weather, Christmas weight gain and broken resolutions, coupled with cash-strapped wallets, make this potentially one of the worst Blue Mondays ever.

Full-time council worker Janice Burnham, 32, said she understands why people feel blue today. "You're a few weeks into the first month of the year, so you know respite from working won't come for several months," said Mrs Burnham, of Boultham Park Road in Lincoln.

"I for one have already broken two New Year's resolutions and the rubbish weather is getting to me. I think I need to book a holiday of some kind so there is something to look forward to." The term Blue Monday was coined following research by Cliff Arnall, formerly of Cardiff University.

He created a mathematical formula to identify a number of the elements contributing to a general feeling of mid-winter blues.

For ideas on how to beat the winter blues, including a chocolate give-away, see Monday's Echo.

“I agree Ian, utter cods whollop. I have been out this afternoon for my daily constitutional, the sun shone (a little), but it was not cold. I then went and booked two weeks in the sun at my local Travel Agent, so I have something to look forward to, and hey, I'm not trapped under hundreds of tons of rubble, waiting for some brave Lincolnshire fireman to come and rescue me.”

“how can a person say which is a depressing day and which isnt? you cant blame the weather as today is a gorgeous day-blue sky and sun is shining, yes its cold but at least its not raining!! and as for new years resolutions, people only half-heartdly make these anyway, knowing they are going to fail regardless!! and bills come in every 3 months, so are we depressed on those days too? probably.”
