“A combination of Church of England bishops and rebel Liberal Democrats are threatening to derail a planned £500-a-week cap on benefit payments when the House of Lords votes on the measure today. Ministers believe there is strong public support for their plans to curb the benefits dependency culture and 'make work pay', while critics say that many families will be forced out of their homes by the changes. How do you feel about the current benefits system and the proposed changes?”
“It is disturbing to hear that some people who are "long term unemployed" - who actually choose to be this way are able to take home hundreds of pounds a week in benefits, sometimes more than people who go out to work and pay the taxes. The benefits system should be there only as a short term resource to help sustain a level of living whilst that person searches for employment, instead of paying for - in some cases - luxury living, 42" plasma TV's are a luxury that should be earnt and not paid for by tax payers. Now, saying that, there will be some cases wher people truly cannot find work, or are unable to work and these need support to a higher level, totally agree, but then they complin about being "means tested", anyone who truly deserves benefit shouldn't complain about the testing, those who do probably don't need the levels they are getting. Capping at a level is a way forward, but with suitable course for exceptions to be made when required.”
