His parents, Lawrence and Kim, and sister Emily have paid tribute to him.

In a statement they said: "We are devastated by the tragic loss of our lovely son and brother Matthew. It still doesn't seem real and probably never will.

"We have been overwhelmed by the messages of condolences from friends and family and colleagues.

"He touched the lives of so many with his kind and caring nature.

"We are all blessed with such wonderful memories."

Because the crash involved a police car, the investigation in to Mr Tuffin's death has now been taken over by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

IPCC investigators have begun to collect evidence relating to the collision, including gathering any relevant CCTV footage, taking account of witness statements, viewing scene photographs and examining police airwave transmissions.

They have requested that any photographs taken of the scene are sent to the IPCC.

The data recorder from the police vehicle has also been retrieved.

Mr Tuffin's family has been informed of the IPCC's involvement. IPCC Commissioner Amerdeep Somal said: "I send my sincere condolences to Mr Tuffin's family in these awful circumstances.

"We are undertaking an independent investigation into the fatal collision and we would be grateful for any witnesses to this tragic event on Sunday night to come forward to the IPCC."

Any witnesses to the collision, which happened in Carholme Road close to the junction with Gresham Street at 10.10pm on Sunday, March 27, should call the IPCC on 0800 096 9079 or e-mail carholme@ipcc.gsi.gov
