Disaster-hit couple are back home

Tuesday, August 26, 2008, 07:30

A COUPLE whose dream retirement to Austria was wrecked by a string of disasters are back home in Washingborough.

Phyllis and Karl Waechter (both 70), had to turn their back on their future plans when a mix-up over their pension arrangements meant Mrs Waechter could not obtain vital health care.

Then the removal van containing all their possessions broke down in Belgium for nearly a week and their four pet poodles were impounded at Calais.

Now the Waechters are finally back with their possessions in Julia Road.

"It is great to be home – this is the first day for ages when I have not cried my eyes out," said Mrs Waechter.

"We have had lots of people offering us help, including a couple from Florida who were prepared to fly out to France to get the dogs and foster them for six months."
