Sausage and mash are festival treat

Monday, October 27, 2008, 07:30

Bangers and mash was the dish of the day as the Lincoln Sausage and Potato Festival took over part of the city's uphill area.

Hundreds of visitors descended on the Castle Hill square to celebrate the county's two trademark foods and mark the Year of the Potato.

Local produce, including venison, Lincolnshire sausages and organic vegetables were on sale and children were entertained in a craft tent.

Stuart Fitzgerald (42), travelled from Grimsby with his wife and three children.

"It's been a really good day," he said.

"It's been nice to celebrate some of the things that make Lincolnshire well known and to support the people who produce locally-grown food.

"The kids really enjoyed the entertainment put on for them, such as the card-making and areas for crafts.

"I really liked the town crier competition and the cook-off. It's really nice to see Lincolnshire people getting together to celebrate what the county has to offer."

Michelin starred chef Pierre Koffman judged some of the best bangers and mash recipes and live cookery demonstrations took place throughout the day.

The free event also offered live performances from entertainers Cosmic Sausages and a Mr Potato Head design competition.
