Get your skates on and join the rollergirls

Monday, August 11, 2008, 00:00

GIRLS, put on your roller skates and get ready for some ankle-rapping, arm-locking and falling over.

Roller derby – the contact sport known for its fast-paced pushing and shoving – needs more Lincolnshire recruits.

The Lincolnshire Bomber Rollergirls, who play the American game, are looking for new team members.

Based in Lincoln, the squad already has 20 members but wants more danger-loving women ready to take on the com petition.

Team member Zoe Powell (32), of Monks Road, Lincoln, said: "Roller derby is making a huge comeback as an up and coming, full contact, fast-paced team sport and one of the few that is all-female."

The sport sees two five-piece teams battle it out on an oval circuit.

Clad in roller skates and a selection of protective body equipment including a helmet, four members of each team set off round the track before being followed five seconds later by more team members, called 'jammers'.

The jammers have to force their way through the teams – including pushing and shoving – to win points.

The sport is not for the faint-hearted – one Lincoln team member broke her wrist in three places during one practice session.

The women are currently training twice a week and are hoping to take part in the 2009 roller derby season when they would face teams from across the country.
