Every little outcry won't stop Tesco
CALLS for the decision to approve a new Tesco store in Sleaford to be reconsidered and for a parish poll to be conducted on the issue have been dismissed.
North Kesteven District Council (NKDC) gave the go-ahead for the supermarket to built on the former Advanta Seeds site three weeks ago and also approved associated applications for a new link road to cut across the Boston Road recreation ground and the redevelopment of the existing Tesco site in Northgate.
This sparked a public outcry and the Target has been inundated with letters and calls from angry residents demanding a rethink.
But NKDC leader Coun Marion Brighton has told the Target the approvals are "final" and has claimed the developments will be good for Sleaford with "significant economic benefits."
She said this included creating hundreds of new jobs and drawing increased numbers of shoppers to the town, as well as attracting new businesses.
Coun Brighton pointed out a town poll was carried out in November in partnership with Sleaford Town Council.
She said: "The poll asked, 'are you in favour of a road being constructed across Boston Road Recreation Ground now or at any time in the future?' The results were Yes – 1,438, and No – 1,351.
"A subsidiary question was also asked, 'are you in favour of retaining Boston Road Recreation Ground as a recreation ground, now and in the future?'. The poll responded Yes – 2,250 and No – 386.
"These results were taken into consideration when designing the layout of the link road.
"As part of the plans, the land will be maintained as public open space, with an extension proposed on adjacent land to compensate for any land lost to the road scheme. This will result in an increase of recreational space that will benefit the whole community.
"The District Council has been looking at a number of options with Tesco and Lincolnshire County Council with regards to the purchase of the land for development.
"Officers have also met with Gladedale, the developers of the Bass Maltings, and will be meeting with the developers of the Tech Foods site, Albourne, with the hope of holding planning committee meetings for both applications in September."

“So we'd obviously rather save a few dying trees over the prospect of the new trees being planted in what will be a larger recreation area after the development.
People seem to be forgetting that the proposed route allow for more land set aside for recreation than what will actually be used. The Maltings development includes recreation areas within and this link road is needed for this to go ahead.
Recreational facilities do not have to be old in order to prove their worth to what is already a dying ghost town (see all the empty shops / charity shops).”

“Whilst I wholeheartedly support the idea of bringing appropriate, new facilities to Sleaford I cannot agree with the plan to destroy 100 year old trees on the Rec to do it when there are perfectly reasonable alternatives. If the road went through the Bowling Club then we could still have the trees AND get the new Tesco store. Why is the District Council so determined to do this, even in contravention of its own planning rules? Even the Town Council have said that there appears to have been no proper consideration of alternatives by NKDC.
I think serious questions need to be asked about the way this decision has been taken and urge anyone who feels the same to sign the petition on the No. 10 website: http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/SaveSleafordRec/ . The petition lists the specific rules that appear to have been ignored.
I think the quotes from NKDC in this article are indicative of how much our District Councillors (who don't live here) disdain the views of residents (who do). They obviously do really believe that they 'know what's good for the town' and we don't. I very strongly hope that the Town Council will not take the same view - I hope it decides not to sell the land to be used for this purpose.”

“I get fed up with people who would rather save a few trees than let our town move with the times!
Planners have obviously gone with the most suitable route for Sleaford and have promised that in return we will get even more green space and new trees planted.
The plans for the new road, the new Tesco and The Maltings project look fantastic for
this town and essential if we want to stop the younger people of Sleaford moving to somewhere more exciting.
Sleaford is a small market town which could also be a fun place to live for young people, as well as older.
As a 30 something male who is Sleafordian born and bred, I find it sad we currently have nowhere to buy clothes from and our night life is almost dead.
Sleaford has to move on and quickly before it dies.
Tesco Extra will bring new people shopping into this town and stop people from Sleaford going to Lincoln, Grantham and Boston.
The development will almost certainly bring in new retailers and nightlife too.
Sleaford needs to have a balance for the young and old and when this project is complete, I'm sure it will have.
If it gets stopped, Sleaford will be a ghost town full of charity shops, mobility scooters and over 55 developments.”

“Why will they not put the road thru the Bowls Club!?? We all want Sleaford to do well but lets see some common sense! Sleaford will never be a ghost town, its economy is underpinned by a very broad range of essential businesses and the RAF communities. Most people have bought houses here and continue to do so with out major retail outlets..what that says is they like it as it is.”

“Carl, I fail to see why we, the people of Sleaford have to sacrifice our only decent area of greenland and a large proportion of the trees thereon when there are other options available. I think you will find that this is what the majority of "NIMBY's" are opposed to, NOT the modernisation and development of our town. Surely we have the right to voice our opinions.”

“It still wont shut the NIMBYs up though will it. Sleaford NEEDS modernising and developing or it will turn into a ghost town very rapidly.”
