Couple's relief as stranded poodles get foster home

Friday, August 29, 2008, 07:30

There's a happy ending to the story of four pet poodles from Lincolnshire who have been quarantined in France.

Phyllis and Karl Waechter had to leave their dogs when they had to back out of a house-move to Austria because of bureaucratic and health problems.

The Waechters, from Washingborough, were worried that two of the dogs, who are elderly, might not have survived in the basic quarantine kennels near Calais.

But now British-born Karen Hendicott, who runs hotel-style accommodation for dogs in Brittany, has stepped in and said she will take in the Waechters' poodles for the next six months.

Mrs Hendicott has a business running accommodation for dogs which are being imported and exported and need a good quality 'foster home' while quarantine regulations are being heeded.

"I read about the Waechters in the Echo online and I am more than happy to keep the poodles here," said Mrs Hendicott, who lives near Roscoff.

Mrs Waechter said she was delighted and relieved.

"It is so good to think that my dogs will be treated well and will be able to run free," she said.

"We might even get to visit them in France."
