Vulcan needs £1.75m a year to keep flying

THE historic Vulcan bomber needs £1.75m a year to keep it going, say restorers.

Campaigners who have restored the 40-year-old aircraft are looking for a sponsor to ensure it is not grounded.

They say they need help in paying the £1,500 a day to keep it maintained and the £10,000 fuel bill every time it takes to the air.

They are hoping that commercial sponsors will come forward.

Restoration work on the delta wing bomber swallowed up £7 million of funding before it finally took to the skies on October 18 last year.

But now fund-raisers have warned that unless significantly more cash is secured, the 2009 season could see the plane grounded or making fewer appearances.

Andrew Edmondson, the engineering director of the Vulcan to the Sky Trust explained that more commercial sponsors were needed.

He said: "We have been supported on the operational side but it's the overheads we haven't had the sponsorship or investment for – but we have managed to keep the aircraft flying.

"We need to be able to plan ahead and more funding is required to do that."

Following the end of the summer's fly pasts and appearances the Avro Vulcan XH558 will be stored in a hangar in Buntingthorpe, Leicestershire.
