Neatly packaged soaps and perfectly preserved lipstick from a Lincolnshire firm's archives are heading for the Antiques Roadshow.

The long-running TV series is being filmed at Lincoln Cathedral on March 19 and Lincolnshire Co-operative is taking along a treasure trove of items from its collection.

Society spokesman Emma Snedden said: "We decided to take items to the Antiques Roadshow, not to get valuations, but because we feel a lot of the pieces tell a story about how people used to live.

"They show the social history of the area."

The items that will be taken on the day include a set of Toodles toilet soaps, a selection of matchbox cars, a booklet listing joining members from 1892 to 1920, a price printing set and some old keys which were once used to lock up old stores.

Some of the items come from a selection that were donated to the Museum of Lincolnshire Life and others are from a selection which are on show in the Lincolnshire Co-operative's boardroom.

"I've got some favourite pieces from those we are taking along," said Miss Snedden.

"One is a time capsule the manager of one of our branches put behind a partition in 1896 with a card instructing the finder to hand it to the secretary of Lincoln Co-operative Society when found."

The items that the society will be taking to the roadshow fall under the popular nostalgic collectable category of antiques.

Clinton Slingsby, auctioneer at Thos Mawer and Son, said: "There is a big market for nostalgic items although it is not a market you can identify as hugely valuable.

"Items like this are popular because there is a huge yearning for days gone by and these items help people recreate the atmosphere of the time."
