Nine people treated after 'chemical reaction' in toilet at property in Barrowby, near Grantham
At least nine people needed medical treatment after a 'chemical reaction' in a toilet caused poisonous fumes to fill a Barrowby property.
Two fire crews from Grantham were called to reports of a smoke-logged building in High Road just after 4pm yesterday.

A Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "The fumes were caused by a chemical reaction between toilet blocks and domestic bleach.
"Fire and rescue used two breathing apparatus and one hose reel to remove the toilet blocks and flush away."

“@ Gnome
BA teams always operate as pairs, just like divers, it is a buddy-buddy system. If your single person had a fault with his/her BA and was overcome who do you think would be there to pull him/her out?
This was a chemical hazard and has to be treated with respect. If you had spent time in the military you would realise that from your NBC (Nuclear/Biological/Chemical) training.
Mick is right about Chlorine gas; suggest you read Wilfred Owen's Dulce et Decorum est to understand the effects.”

“@ Gnome
There is a good possibility that the reaction involved Sodium Hypochlorite(Bleach) and Hydrogen Chloride(Toilet Cleaner) - in which case the gas given-off would be Chlorine.
Chlorine was the first gas used during World War One (by both sides) as Chemical Weapon and has some very nasty effects on the body (it reacts with water in your body to create hydrochloric acid)
I think they were correct to treat the threat seriously”

“Was this a commercial property, or residential, to have 'at least' nine people in it?
And why the ludicrous fire service response?
One person, with breathing apparatus and no hose reel, could have removed the toilet blocks and flushed the toilet, or vice versa.
I sometimes think they like the drama.”
