£20k still needed to provide life-changing surgery for Joel James from Sleaford
A FURTHER £20,000 is needed by the end of June to enable a young boy who has spastic diplegia cerebral palsy to undergo life-changing surgery.
Fundraising events have taken place in a bid to raise some of the £50,000 for Sleaford boy Joel James who is hoping to travel to America in July to have Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) Surgery.
His mother Karen said: "The campaign for Joel Quest is now gathering pace. Last week, I had an email from the hospital where Joel will have his surgery this summer. I had to confirm that we will have the funds in place to pay, so I took a leap of faith and said "yes." However, this means we now have a huge task ahead and a major flurry of fundraising activity needs to take place to make it a reality. We need to raise at least another £20,000 before the end of June.
"Joel is very excited about the prospect of his surgery and the change it will make to his life. He starts at St George's Academy in September and it would be lovely for Joel to have had the surgery over the summer, so that he won't need his wheelchair."
Money has also been donated through businesses and organisations who have held fundraising events. These include a fun day at AW Repair Group in Sleaford, a reptile day by Reptile Life owner Rob Louth, a donation from Sleaford and District Lions, a Where's Wally Fun run and a fire walk.
There is still time to take part in events of make a donation.
The next event on Sunday, April 29, is a Zumbathon in the Sleaford and Kesteven Selective Academy school hall from 10am to noon. Entry is £8.
The next is a 70s night, with a special appearance by Abba tribute act Angel Eyes, on Thursday, May 31 at Sleaford Legionnaires Club, starting at 7.30pm. This is a ticket-only, with tickets from the club or by calling Karen on 07900 916763.
There will be many other events and activities taking place for Joel. Please keep checking the Target and www.joelsquest.co.uk for the latest information.
