£3.7m marina in Cherry Willingham which could create up to 70 jobs gets go-ahead
A £3.7 million marina that could create up to 70 jobs has been given the green light by councillors.
The 220-berth development is planned for Eastfield Rise Farm, off Fiskerton Road in Cherry Willingham.
The site will include a workshop, a café, a 24-bedroom hotel with bar and restaurant plus 40 holiday lodges.
Globe Consultants is handling the application on behalf of a private landowner.
Phil Scrafton, director at the firm, said: "It's an exciting project and I think that is why it has been very well received by most of the local community.
"There is the Burton Waters development on the other side of Lincoln and we hope there will be a similar investment here.
"We hope the marina will make Cherry Willingham a better place to be and provide amenities to people that they don't have at the moment."
Planning committee members at West Lindsey District Council unanimously agreed to the plans.
Only details of a Section 106 agreement, which requires the developer to create a community facility, need to be confirmed before the project is rubber stamped.
Concerns about the impact of the construction project were raised initially.
But a Cherry Willingham Parish Council survey showed 42 people supported the plans while just 12 people were in opposition.
And a revision of the plans was made to address these concerns.
However, a resident-submitted document showed 76 people were against the project, with eight in support.
A parish council statement said the body "broadly supported" the application.
"While some residents are completely against the scheme, the majority support the concept of the marina," it said.
"However, most have various reservations and concerns. The council believes that to date some, but not all, of their concerns have been addressed."
The main concerns were over the appearance of buildings, which some members said were "too stark".
Lincolnshire Waterways Partnership (LWP), made up of Lincolnshire County Council, British Waterways and the Environment Agency, has given its backing to the marina.
Partnership spokesman Mary Powell, said: "Our research suggests there's a real lack of this kind of mooring space in the county.
"This project will help to rectify that, so it's great news that it's been given the go ahead.
"Not only will businesses and communities along the waterway benefit from the improved boating facilities, but there's also the possibility of new walkways, cycleways and bridleways, allowing greater access to the River Witham and the Viking Way route."
George Backovic, development services spokesman for West Lindsey District Council, said: "We know there is a demand for this type of facility and we believe this will be a very positive development."

“To Lincoln_Biker who seemed to think my comment about being in the worst recession since the 1930s was an exaggeration, and that the hyperinflation in Germany in the 1930s was worse (undeniable since it was one of the major causes of the rise to power of Adolf Hitler), please check this report. I think it shows I am factually correct.

“Lincoln_Biker gives an interesting link to German hyperinflation. I should have said that we are in the worst UK recession since 1929, as of course the world recession of 1929 hit other countries far worse than the UK. I think that this list shows that technically, in terms of reduction of GDP, national debt, unemployment and other factors we have been in a longer period of recession than in the period of recession in the late 20s and early 30s. I would be glad to hear from economists whether this is wrong, as I got it from an article in the Economist. Not available online unfortunately, but here's the Wikipedia version.

“This complex will allow moorings that mean you don't:
Have to transit Lincoln to get a mooring allowing larger boats to tie up.
Have to stick to a 4 knots speed limit to get to the mooring.”

“"we are in the worst recesssion since 1929" Are you sure? Are you filling your fireplace with bank notes because they're cheaper to burn than wood or did you have your central heating on last night?

“Here in Burton Waters every other boat is up for sale and there are loads of moorings available. Most of the property owners who would love to sell have had to reduce their prices again and again. Look on "rightmove" to see how many are for sale. I don't believe there is a shortage of mooring spaces in the county. I will be reading the "Rotten Boroughs" column in Private Eye" very carefully to see whose pockets are being lined by this project. Or possibly it won't be so profitable after all, given that we are in the worst recesssion since 1929.”

“A bridge taking cars would be better still, might reduce the need for an Eastern bypass!”

“A small bridge over the river to link with the footpath/cycle path might not be a bad idea either.
Be good if the water was that colour as well.”

“"How much of my taxes is going on this?"
None, read the article it is a private development. In fact under a Section 106 agreement the taxpayer will benefit.”
