£600,000 appeal to save Grantham's St Wulfram's Church spire
A £600,000 appeal to rebuild the top of Grantham's historic St Wulfram's Church spire is being launched tomorrow.
The Save Our Spire (SOS) appeal aims to raise the substantial sum needed to rebuild the top 40ft of the spire which is being supported by temporary bracing scaffolding to prevent it from collapsing.
If the funding is not forthcoming the section will have to be removed and the spire capped.
The church is applying for grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund and smaller grant-making bodies both nationally and locally.

But Rector Canon Christopher Andrews expects that the church and local community will have to raise £100,000 of the estimated £600,000.
He said: "It is impossible to think of St Wulfram's without the top part of its spire.
"It is a landmark and a symbol for Grantham and its people. We are justly proud of it.
"The spire has watched over the town for 700 years and previous generations have had to make sure the church building is handed on in good repair.
"Now it is our turn to do the same.
"With the help of many people in Grantham and beyond, I am sure we can reach our target."
It is hoped that the repair work will get underway in early 2014 and be completed by the autumn.
The church is planning a programme of fund-raising events – starting with tomorrow's launch.
At noon, a Save Our Spire banner will be unfurled from the top of the tower and a balloon race started. Visitors will also be able to find out more about the spire work from church chief architect Graham Cook.
The launch coincides with St Wulfram's open day running from 10am to 4pm. Attractions will include tower tours, the chance to try flower arranging and children's entertainment.
