£90k extension opens at Gainsborough primary school

Primary pupils are settling in to their new £90,000 school extension.

Youngsters are making the most of improvements to St George's Church of England Community Primary School in Gainsborough.

It includes an extended classroom and a block-paved area at the back of the building. It also features a new meeting room and office, a purpose-built corridor leading outside and extra space in what was a cramped staff room.

"There have been many improvements in the five-and-a-half years I've been here," said deputy head Janet Sanderson, who has co-ordinated the programme.

"But this project has provided much needed additional learning space for the children.

"They have all been involved in the scheme because the nursery group kept a progress report and diary of the work."

Former school council member Crystal Foster, 11, said that all the 175 pupils on the roll were fully consulted.

"I was the secretary of the council and we wrote down all the ideas which the children had and took them to the teachers," she said.

Parent governor Lara Dickinson has three sons – Ben, 10, Owen, 9, and Rhys, 6 – at St George's.

"I think the new facilities here are fantastic," she said. "They have created a very happy and friendly environment."

Gainsborough All Saints' priest-in-charge Canon Michael Cooney also praised the new extensions.

"This is a church school which plays a very important role in the life of the parish," he said. "I think the pupils and staff deserve excellent facilities and good conditions in which to work."

Head teacher Katie Barry said: "The school looks stunning and that is very important – our children deserve nothing but the best."
