“ What better day to find the excuse to tuck into a great British plate of fish and chips! I have to admit this was my first visit, even though it's been there for as long as I can remember. I've read the reviews, so I can't do what I'd like to - which is to ask why I'd waited so long. It just about survives on the back of it's award-winning status - but the department store cafeteria-style dining area is dated, although clean and spacious. At least you're not going to leave smelling like a chip fryer, like you do when you eat at a lot of fish restaurants. I liked the traditional touch of plates of bread and butter and it's great the fish comes fresh from Grimsby. Portions are not big but are adequate (think about the calories), but the batter was darker and greasier than I would have liked - and looking around everyone's looked the same. Honestly, for the price - which for two people and including a cup of tea was £18 - it should have been better. On the plus side, staff were very friendly. And the toilets were sparkling. So, let's hope I just caught it on an off day - because I'd like to see Mr Chips frying the flag for Louth for many years to come. ”

“Yes, very pricey for the size of the portions served up. Even the small plates don't make the portion look any bigger. The restaurant needs a complete refurb, looks like something from the 60s/70s era.....Very polite staff though.”

“Very pricey for fish and chips. The restaurant looks like a transport cafe. Disappointing.”

“This is going to sound odd ........... and honestly, my friend and I are not normally to be found imbibing alcohol before it goes dark .......... but can we just recommend that you go to Mr. Chips and try ordering chips and gravy with a glass of their fruity red wine one lunchtime. We did. It's brilliant! Go on........dare you!”

“Mr Chips has been going for donkey's years, and once you've been in and tasted the food you'll see why. The cafe is a weird set-up - huge and cavernous and a bit of a throwback to the days when coach parties used to come from all over to taste a bit of deep fried heaven. Now, they tend to use sliding doors to make the space smaller and more intimate, unless there are kids parties going on. I do suspect they employ some of the oldest waitresses I've ever seen, but they do their job well so why not?!
The food is pretty good, and certainly better then Harry Ramsden's which has always been a bit of a damp disappointment. Fish comes in fresh from Grimsby and the chips are cooked just right, crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. Kids are made welcome and there are loads of high chairs. My only criticism is that the fixed table & chair arrangements may make it a bit difficult for wheelchair users.
All in all, it's a strange place but charming in it's own way. And there are few nicer ways in Louth to get a full belly on a budget.”
