I saw Jimmy Savile grope young girl, says former TV news reader from Lincolnshire
A former TV newsreader from Lincolnshire claims he was "laughed at" after reporting Jimmy Savile for groping a child.
Alan Hardwick says he told a manager at Yorkshire Television that he'd seen the Jim'll Fix It host pinch a girl's bottom.
But he says his complaint was brushed aside and that comments from colleagues in the industry "made him feel like a fool" for making a fuss.
Mr Hardwick, a candidate for the Lincolnshire Police and Crime Commissioner post and a former Calendar presenter, said: "One time in the late 1980s, Savile was in the building and I was going to go and say hello to him.

"I went into the studio and standing with his back to me was Jimmy Savile with about half a dozen girls with him. They were probably 12 or 13.
"They were about to go on set so I decided I would speak to Savile later but before I left he squeezed the bottom of the little girl to his right who he had his arm around."
Mr Hardwick promptly left the studio and raised the issue with a manager, who offered an explanation.
"He said that the girl must have been a relative to Savile and was just being friendly and I accepted that," he added.
"I mentioned it to other people in the industry and at the BBC and I was laughed at because they all said, 'Don't you know that Savile likes them young?' I felt a bit of a fool.
"I have been watching the various programmes on him with concern and total amazement – but mostly with disgust. Without a doubt his status protected him.
"It was generally known within television not that he was a predator or a paedophile but that he liked them young.
"I was quite willing to accept the word of the manager but looking back, even if it had been a relative of Savile's, it still was wrong. It did not even occur to me at the time to take the matter further."
The director of public prosecutions is to review decisions by the Crown Prosecution Service not to prosecute Savile back in 2009.
At present, the Metropolitan Police says it has identified more than 200 potential victims.
Mr Hardwick also recalls taking his 10-year-old daughter to meet Savile, who died last year aged 84.
"I remember I had been out on a job with him and I had taken my daughter who was about 10 at the time," he said.
"I wanted to introduce her to who I thought at the time was a great person. He was great with her, signing autographs and then he suggested having a picture. He asked her to sit on his knee.
"Afterwards, she said she wanted to go to the car because she didn't like him.
"I have no doubt whatsoever there has been a massive cover-up. It appears, at least to me, that bosses thought 'we are not going to jeopardise the career of a man who draws in audiences of tens of millions' and that, I believe, is why the truth never got out."
An ITV spokesman said: "We would urge Mr Hardwick to contact us with details relating to the serious allegation he makes. We take any allegations of criminal activity within ITV / YTV, or to the knowledge of ITV / YTV, very seriously and would immediately contact the police in such cases, and follow up with our own inquiries."

“Anyone who carries out any form of sexual act with a child, is without doubt a " monster" and for someone like you "chicken bob" to suggest otherwise , I find more than a little disturbing.”

“"work that needs to be done to help the real victims of hardened rapists and paedophiles who genuinely need help"
Indeed, and you think that of the 300 none were raped and therefore a victim? I think you have a point in the fact that it has gone over the top with the issue becoming an attack by the BBC on itself and the media at large happily getting involved. But to say that Saville was not really that bad is, to be quite honest, disgusting. I can only hope you are trolling as you so often do in the Lincoln City pages.”

“Chickenbob
I don't see how you can criticise the Echo for running the same story that is on the front of almost every British daily newspaper and on every TV news channel continuously.
Bearing in mind that even Savile's family have accepted that there is case to answer, how do you come to the conclusion that history will depict him as anything but "A Monster"? I think you are an insult to every one of the 300 lines of enquiry and is it any wonder that these victims felt they would not be believed when people like you are so readily available to jump to his defense without shred of substance or reason.
Lastly, if you think Hardwick is disgusting then your comment...... "What we will find is a dirty old man who did inappropriate things with under-age girls. Criminal actions yes. A monster - NO!!!!"......is frankly a little scary, if abusing underage girls and boys does not make him a monster, i shudder to think what you think does.
I hope history remembers him as a serial abuser and nothing else”

“I see that the Super Soaraway Echo is now on the band-waggon. I paid a quid to buy your rag this week. I will think twice before spending anything on your newspaper in future.
Let's get the facts straight. Ex local TV presenter, many years ago sees Ex DJ pinch someone's bottom. FRONT PAGE NEWS IN THE ECHO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??????????
Everyone is jumping on the band-waggon for a piece of the Savile action, ranging from pathetic failed actresses who made a couple of cameo appearances on a sitcom who claims he 'hugged' her for a bit too long (great way to revive your career, love) to ex local TV hacks who want to join a lucrative gravy train (hopefully no one will vote for you now, you publicity seeking idiot). It seems that absolutely anyone can now benefit from the Savile free-for-all (a dead man can't sue for libel and can't answer his critics).
The whole Jimmy Savile saga has shown up the very worst of the UK media. Apparently Savile has gone from being Jimmy the Saint, to an IRA supporter, ***********c who abused 300 children. Apart from the fact that (when the history books are written) it will be shown that Savile was nowhere near as bad as he has been made out to be, what is even worse is that the Echo is playing the tabloid blame game to sell more papers.
OK, some people were 'abused' maybe, but when the truth comes out, we'll perhaps find that a few (nowhere near the 300 claimed) 15 year old girls were groped or touched inappropriately by Savile. Yes, I agree they are still 'victims', but to create a monster out of Jimmy Savile just to sell more newspapers is doing a total dis-service to the real victims of rape and real hardened paedophiles. All this Savile nonsense is watering down the the work that needs to be done to help the real victims of hardened rapists and paedophiles who genuinely need help. I am not denying Savile did bad things, but this story is now getting out-of-control and anyone seeking a bit of quick-fame or 'compo' is jumping on the band-waggon.
ECHO - this is NOT front page news. It is not news at all. This is an insult to our intelligence.
HARDWICK - using Savile for your own personal political reasons is disgusting.
READERS - Savile did some bad things, but he is not the monster that the press (and ITV) want you to think. When the truth finally comes out, we won't find 300 rape victims. What we will find is a dirty old man who did inappropriate things with under-age girls. Criminal actions yes. A monster - NO!!!!
PLEASE can we have some balanced reporting of Jimmy Savile?”

“The vulnerability of children including actions as witnessed by Mr Hardwick required formal notification to the Police by him at the time.
Lincolnshire is desperate for the right people to stand up strongly & independently for children, putting the right people at the forefront of child safeguarding finally.
Regrettably, politicians / Councillors are so busy passing the buck that I remain alarmed for child safety unless there is a radical change.”

“Bit of a coincidence that Mr hardwick should come out with this story, just as the post of Police Commissioner is up for election. Maybe a cynical person would assume that he's hoping for a sympathetic vote from the public regarding his distress at the time. As others have stated, why oh why, was the allegations properly investigated at the time.”
