However, other big nominees like Britney Spears, Kanye West, The Jonas Brothers, Katy Perry and Pink skipped the line of waiting press.
Mel B was rooting for awards host Russell Brand, saying: "I think Russell Brand's great. I'm a Brit so of course I'm going to be cheering for him. I've been living here for six years and it's always nice to come to events like this, it's always good to be among artists."
However, Ne-Yo turned his attentions to Britney Spears, who was set to appear at the ceremony despite her disastrous performance of Gimme More last year.
"We all know what happened last time. So I'm praying she knocks it out of the park."
Hotly-tipped artist Chris Brown was full of praise for the Jonas Brothers. "Their style is incredible and their music is incredible," he said on the red carpet.
Demi Lovato, Taylor Swift and Tokio Hotel were also happy to pose before the ceremony.
The MTV Video Music Awards are on Monday at 9pm on MTV1.
