Jack Burnell has earned himself a call-up to the GB Junior European team after a sensational performance at the British Championships in Sheffield.

The Lincoln Vulcan wowed the selectors at the Ponds Forge event, producing three new personal bests to land himself a spot on the team for their trip to Helsinki in July and also a place in the British Open Water Camp that takes place in Israel this winter.

Burnell started the week with a personal best time in the 400m freestyle and returned on Friday to compete in the 1500m freestyle event.

The 16-year-old entered on a time of 16.04.16 and took a massive personal best improvement of 11 seconds to secure a place in the final of the event with a time of 15.53.63.

On his return on Saturday he not only repeated his outstanding swim of the previous day but improved upon it by a further five seconds, recording an impressive 15.48.21.

Vulcans’ head coach Fred Furniss was pleased with the efforts of Burnell and the rest of the squad who took part.

"That these young swimmers gave such an excellent account of themselves at such a high level meet is a credit to both them and the club," said Furniss.

"They have all worked extremely hard to achieve the qualifying times.

"They will now focus on their training once more and work hard again to build up to the National Championships in August.

"I am delighted with Jack’s performance and his selection for Great Britain duty is a fantastic and well-earned achievement for him."

Burnell was joined by four other Lincoln Vulcans at the British Championships in Sheffield.

Lining up alongside him were Ollie Bitowt, 14, Olly Richmond, 15, Molllie Temple, 15 and Hayley Williams, 16.

The four all earned the opportunity to compete alongside the nation’s fastest senior swimmers after coming through a series of tough qualifying times.

Sprinter Hayley fought her way to a place in the women’s semi-final in the 50m breastroke, swimming within reach of her personal best time with two solid performances of 33.66 and 33.90 seconds in the heat and semi-final respectively.

Youngest swimmer Ollie competed in three events and delivered two lifetime best performances in the 400m freestyle and 200m backstroke.

His 15-year-old team-mates Olly and Mollie both produced solid performances and came within a fraction of their personal best times in the 200 backstroke and 400 individual medley respectively.

Lincoln Vulcans is a Swim 21 performance club which welcomes swimmers who wish to develop their competitive swimming abilities. A progressive training programme based upon the ASA Long Term Athlete Development framework underpins the ethos of the club. For further details about the club, please visit the website –
