With Heritage Lottery Fund backing to the tune of £3.5m announced last week, the Friends of Newark & Sherwood Museum Service aim to raise between £50,000 and £100,000 towards capital funding.

They are organising a 54-mile sponsored walk – when six volunteers will trek along the Trent valley from East Bridgford to Gainsborough.

Leaving on Monday, June 18, they will aim to complete the challenge on the day of the talk by Friends of Gainsborough Old Hall Association chairman Mr Howitt-Cowan.

Newark and Sherwood Friends' fundraising officer Anne Coyne is running a matched funding appeal on-line at https://localgiving.com/charity/friendsofnewarkandsherwoodmuseumservice

"The Trent Vale Challenge will see a core team of six people walk the whole length, with others joining on individual days," she said.

"The walk will raise money for the museum service but will also promote the heritage of the Trent Valley through a series of outreach events and short talks along the way.

"And the walk is also to celebrate the Olympics coming to the UK and encourage walking for fitness in the local area.

"It is supported by the Trent Vale Landscape Partnership and RWE nPower at Staythorpe Power station."

Gainsborough in the Civil War will be held for an hour-and-a-half at the Old Hall and admission is £6 on the door.

To join the walk or sponsor a member of team e-mail Anne Coyne on vcoyne@btinternet.com or telephone 01636 611640.
